DARFUR, Sudan - Women who have escaped the war-torn Sudanese region of Darfur are living in fear of sexual assault at a refugee camp in Chad. The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and a Massachusetts based group, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), issued a report documenting the “scope and long-term impact of rape and other sexual violence” experienced by these refugee women.
PHR interviewed 88 women from Darfur at the Farchana refugee camp in November. The results indicated 32 women suffered rapes at the hands of Arab militiamen backed by the Khartoum government. About half of the rapes occurred in Darfur, and the rest occurred at the refugee camps. Many of the rapes in Chad occurred when the women left the camp to collect firewood.
"(One) woman told me … she was beaten on her arms so badly that she couldn't use them, and she was raped by four to six men," Said Dr. Sandra Crosby of the Boston Medical Center, who participated in the study.
Susannah Sirkin, PHR’s deputy director, goes further to state that "Women who report being raped are stigmatized, and remain trapped in places of perpetual insecurity. There's no one to stop the rapes, no one to turn to for justice for past or ongoing crimes, and little psycho-social support to address their prolonged and unimaginable traumas."
Even though the Sudanese government denies this sexual violence has ever taken place, the International Criminal Court has accused Sudan’s president, Omar al-Bashir, of organizing “a campaign of rape, murder, and other crimes against Darfur civilians.”
Furthermore, PHR is calling for rape to be considered a war crime, and also calls for "legal reforms in Chad to end impunity for sexual violence.” The Physicians group also calls for effective firewood patrols and increased protection from police and peacekeepers.
